COVID-19: Learn More about the Different Test Types

COVID-19 testing plays a key role in the fight against the virus. There are several tests available, such as the antigen test that can detect a current infection. Knowing more about the different tests available and their uses will help you make an informed decision that meets your needs.

  • Molecular Tests

This type of test diagnoses a current infection with the novel coronavirus. This may also be referred to as the nucleic acid amplification test or the PCR test in California. The turnaround time for this test is around 15-45 minutes using point-of-care tests. When samples need to be sent to the lab, it can take 1-3 days. The molecular test is considered the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19.

  • Antigen Tests

This can be used to determine if you currently have COVID-19 and works by looking for specific viral markers called antigens. The turnaround time can take 15-30 minutes for the result. However, this is considered less accurate than molecular tests.

  • Antibody Tests

Unlike the last two tests, the antibody test is used to determine if you previously had an infection. Also called the serology test, it looks for antibodies specific to the novel coronavirus in the blood. The turnaround times for antibody tests vary. Some point-of-care facilities offer same-day results while some offer results in 1-3 days when the sample is sent to the lab for analysis.
